SearchGPT by OpenAI: Everything You Need to Know So Far

Can SearchGPT outperform Google Search and Bing?

Though still a prototype accessible to only 10,000 test users, OpenAI’s new search engine is already causing a stir in the tech industry as it positions itself as a strong competitor to Google and Bing.

Promising faster, more personalized answers on demand, SearchGPT uses OpenAI’s generative pretrained transformer (GPT) family of large language models (LLMs), namely GPT-3, GPT-4, and GPT-4o, the same LLMs that power ChatGPT.

However, unlike ChatGPT, SearchGPT is not restricted by any knowledge cutoff date. It combines the LLMs with the main functions of a traditional search engine to provide relevant, timely, and easy-to-digest answers.

Exploring SearchGPT Features

SearchGPT revolutionizes the online search experience. Instead of providing links relevant to a search query, it provides summaries of vital information that directly answer user questions with clear attributions for verification.

Additionally, this AI-powered engine allows users to ask follow-up questions to find more specific details related to their query. Like ChatGPT, SearchGPT can maintain context across multiple queries, making the search experience truly conversational and interactive.

OpenAI, however, is not the first to introduce these features. Google’s AI Overviews, formerly Google SGE, provides AI-generated summaries or snippets. What makes AI Overviews less efficient than SearchGPT, though, is it still requires users to visit recommended third-party sites for in-depth answers. Plus, Google has removed the option for follow-up questions and decided to stick to its static, point-in-time responses.

Besides these, SearchGPT prioritizes delivering contextually relevant information rather than relying on keyword matching. It is also ad-free and is expected to be integrated into the ChatGPT interface upon general release.

What to Expect Next

Here’s a comparison of the defining features that make Google Merchant Center Next distinct from the Classic GMC. The excitement surrounding its performance and future availability continues to grow as users await more details about when and how to get their hands on this innovative tool.

However, OpenAI has not yet announced if another waitlist for test users will open or when SearchGPT will likely be released. Instead, as stated on its website, OpenAI intends to further enhance the search experience, particularly in commerce and local information.
