Key Points You Must Know About Google Merchant Center Next

Keep up with the changes in GMC.

Google Merchant Center helps businesses manage and promote their products for free in Google Shopping, Google Ads, and other Google services. While it has already been valuable and accessible for merchants globally, Google deemed it worthy of an upgrade and announced its new version, Google Merchant Center Next, in May 2023.

Google Merchant Center Next is an upgraded version offering enhanced features, improved usability, and seamless integration with other Google services. The complete rollout is expected this year, so businesses should be able to use Merchant Center Next now, if not soon.

Fortunately, Google fully manages the switch to GMC Next, so you, like other merchants, don’t need to worry about making any manual changes. Regardless, it’s essential to understand what this upgrade means, what to expect from the new version, and what makes it better than the Classic GMC.

What Makes Google Merchant Center Next Better?

Discover the standout features of Google Merchant Center Next that provide improved usability and performance compared to the Classic version.

  • Click Potential Estimation—This new metric helps you evaluate a product’s performance potential by comparing it to your highest-performing items. It also helps you identify and optimize products with low click potentials.

  • More In-Depth Insights—The Analysis section equips you with improved and more detailed analytics and reporting features to monitor click-through rates, conversion rates, and other insights into your product performance.

  • Product Studio—This feature allows you to use AI to generate and edit product images for free right in the dashboard.

  • Automatic Data Feed—GMC Next automatically extracts your website’s product titles, descriptions, prices, images, and other information. This feature makes the experience easier and more efficient, especially for small businesses or those without the technical expertise to manually set up a data feed.

  • Update Products Directly—You can now edit product titles, descriptions, sizes, prices, and more without leaving the dashboard.

  • Simplified Onboarding—Thanks to its easier-to-use interface and simplified setup process, onboarding new users or small businesses has never been easier.

What Are the Limitations of GMC Next?

Google Merchant Center Next is cleaner and more streamlined, but there are some limitations to keep in mind. Here’s a brief overview, though these limitations may change.

1. Simplified Diagnostics

Those who are used to the classic merchant center’s detailed and comprehensive diagnostics feature will find the Need Attention section in Google Merchant Center Next oversimplified. Not only does it not show policy violations, product eligibility issues, or data quality issues, but it also lacks historical data.

2. Feed Tab Lacking in Merchant Center Next

As shown in the comparison table, the feed tab is currently unavailable in the new upgraded version of Merchant Center. Users who rely on it should consider this before accepting the invitation to use GMC Next. However, it may become available soon as previously missing features, such as supplement feed and feed rules, were recently added.

3. Missing Feed Optimization Capabilities

Though automated data import is available and typically reliable, errors may still happen. You can manually adjust product details within the dashboard, but this can only be done on a product-by-product basis, which is not ideal for large-scale data feeds.

Despite these limitations, Google Merchant Center Next provides a simpler, more intuitive interface. It is particularly beneficial for merchants with small product catalogs who want to run Performance Max campaigns without requiring feed optimization.
