Google quietly began rolling out its second major core update of the year on June 30. The process wrapped up 16 days later, on July 17, leaving plenty of website owners monitoring their analytics.
Following the March core update earlier this year, the June 2025 update wasn’t some experimental shift. Google described it as a “regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites.” In other words, Google’s still trying to clean up its SERPs, pushing more helpful content to the top and weeding out the fluff.
And the shake-up was real. From July 11 to 14, some sites began to see their rankings nosedive, while others experienced moderate drops. This dramatic movement across the SERPs is known as ranking volatility, which typically occurs during and after a core algorithm update. For those hit the hardest, the question now is: what next?
Unfortunately, as before, Google does not provide a checklist or a magic fix for recovery. Instead, they encourage the same action they have been recommending: write for people, not algorithms. In their own words:
“There’s nothing new or special that creators need to do for this update as long as they’ve been making satisfying content meant for people.”
However, Google recommends waiting at least a week after the update is completed before making any reactionary changes. This means that data monitoring and analysis should begin only on July 24.
To have a better overview of your website’s performance after the update, pay close attention to Google Search Console and Google Analytics. Compare data across three segments—before the core updates started rolling out, during the rollout period from July 1 to 17, and a week after the core update completion—and focus on these factors:
Based on the data collected, you have two options. Don’t panic if you saw a slight drop in rankings. If your content is performing well, there’s no need to rush into major changes. It may just need a little time to recover.
But if your site took a bigger hit, take a closer look at your content and user experience. Are you really answering what today’s searchers are looking for? Is your site genuinely helpful?
If your content strategy relies on chasing keywords or gaming the system, now is the time to adjust. Google recommends revisiting their Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content page. The focus now, more than ever, is quality content that answers questions, informs, engages, and respects the reader’s time.
